Apple – rudderless and rich?

I made the switch from a Windows XP Dell laptop to a Macbook Pro over 7 years ago – and that Mac is still going strong, tho’ I did put more RAM and an SSD in it. Oh and had to replace the GPU but Apple did that for free.

I like the non-Retina Macbook Pros – you could unscrew the base and upgrade bits. Or liked them anyway – there’s just the 13 inch model left.

The current Apple obsession with making pointless things (WHO NEEDS A WATCH?) or useful things thinner, glued together, unrepairable and with too few connectors worries me.

I need a Firewire socket (for a perfectly good Focusrite Saffire audio interface). I don’t want to have to buy an adapter. Likewise I also need a CD drive. I don’t mind if it’s a bit heavier as a result. I also want to be able to pull the thing apart and upgrade bits. There must be a whole market out there for people with similar needs who value practicality over bling and appearance – audio or video editors for example.

Admittedly at some point Firewire and CD drives will both be redundant – but come on, they’re not yet. (Speaks the man with five cassette players).

Is it just me?

Maybe not, here’s an article from The Register – slightly more forthcoming: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2015/03/10/new_apple_macbook_gold_one_usb_port_what_madness_is_this/
