I stumbled across a great set of articles by Sam Inglis about songwriting the other day, published in Sound on Sound magazine back in the early noughties. I read SOS from time to time so I can’t believe I managed to miss this.
They explain a bit of theory, but in an accessible way that made sense to me and had some great examples to back it up. There’s a lot packed in and I’ve read them two or three times now and picked out something new on each reading.
If you haven’t seen them, worth a look. I think it’s the most useful thing I’ve read on the subject!
You can find them on the SOS website: http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/dec00/articles/lyric.asp
